Neck Pain Relief & Trivia Question: How Many Neck Bones Does A Giraffe Have? | Jay Uecker, D.C.

I want to talk about neck pain. And I want to make this a little more interesting for my sake and yours and ask you a little trivia question: If humans have 7 cervical vertebrae, how many cervical vertebrae do giraffe’s have? You’ll get your answer at the end of this article.

As I’ve talked about in all of my articles about pain, in order to understand the source of spinal pain we’ve got to go way back to when we were in the womb and when we were just babies and when we were young kids. During that time in our lives, the part of our nervous system that was online was a part that was just feeling into our environment. We were just relating directly to the energetics of our environment with this very sensitive part of our nervous system.

As we were doing that, we were feeling into the people around us, especially our parents. Since we relied on our parents for our survival, we absorbed the survival patterns that were in their nervous systems, through entrainment. When we adopt these survival patterns, our nervous system is prompted to lock energy away with tension, it shuts breath down to certain areas and uses posture to keep the offending energy separate from other parts of the body.

There are some areas of our body that are particularly sensitive; areas that are very connected to our sense of self: there’s our low back and belly and our thoracic spine and heart. The low back and belly area is all about vulnerability and safety and then there’s our sensitive, feeling heart. Well, if we feel into our environment and feel that it’s not safe, those are two areas that we’re going to protect.

The low back and the heart area are very connected to the neck. In order for the neck to have a free range of motion, there must be full range of motion in the lumbars and behind the heart. Well, for a lot of humans this is not the case and often I find that when people have neck pain, it’s because their low back is locked down and/or their heart area is locked down with tension. Once we can free up the low back and behind the heart, this allows the neck to open up, as well.

Now to answer the trivia question: If humans have seven cervical vertebrae, how many cervical vertebrae do giraffe’s have? Believe it or not, humans and giraffe’s have the same number of cervical vertebrae: seven.
