Use Your Anger To Spring Forward

We are entwined in the rhythms of Nature and our bodies and lives can not help but be entrained by Her rhythms. We've been going inward all winter long, penetrating deeper layers of ourselves; composting more of our crap. In the process that crap has become fertilizer, fuel for growth. It's Spring and right about now that fuel is pushing something new through the crusty surface of our beings.

The question is, can we let it happen? The transition from one physical, mental and emotional season to another requires new feelings, thoughts and actions. Free of resistance, the Spring of the healing process is all bunnies and rainbows. For some of us, though, this part of the process doesn't happen so smoothly. We can often feel physically, mentally and emotionally STUCK.

As our old perceptions, behaviors and structures morph into new ones, discomfort is likely. Tension may be present, our minds may race, but what I really want to draw your attention to—the key to getting unstuck—is the ANGER that is probably present. “I’m not angry,” you might say, “frustrated, yes.” Let’s face it, frustration is really just a socially acceptable way for us to say that we’re pissed off.

Anger is a vital part of the healing process. What we do with it when it comes along will decide whether we stay stuck, or evolve. We could let it hijack our minds. This usually shows up in one of two ways: 1) either we make the situations, circumstances and people around us responsible for our anger, buying into the story that there's something wrong with them, or 2) we turn it against ourselves, using it to fan the flames of the idea that there's something wrong with us. I'd like to recommend a third option: we could honor the parts of ourselves that are angry, giving those parts permission to be fully felt and thereby claiming the Intelligent energy within the anger for ourselves.

How do we do this? At the very first sign of frustration or anger, stop what you’re doing. Immediately bring your attention to the sensation of the anger in your body. Notice where it is exactly. Notice what the boundaries are like. Does it have shape or volume? Is there movement? Is it stretching, vibrating, burning, spreading, pushing out, collapsing, etc…? Notice the urge to go into thinking and will yourself to stay with the sensation. Every moment you can do this, you're integrating the wisdom of the Intelligent energy that's locked within your stuckness.

Hopefully you're all bunnies and rainbows right now, but if you're not and you're feeling stuck, remember it is a normal and important part of the healing process and, like the seasons, it will change. But when it comes you’ll know exactly how to turn it into an opportunity for growth. Happy Spring!
