Pain Happens For Two Reasons, Which One Describes You?

Last time, in our conversation about pain, we talked about how, if we want the pain to change we’ve got to add new energy to the system. This can be done by adding energy from the outside, or by liberating energy from the inside. When we bring our attention to physical pain we might notice that there’s an emotional component. The experience of emotional energy is internal energy being liberated from the pain.

Pain is basically just sequestered energy. It's energy that our nervous system has put on lock-down because it decided it wasn't safe for us to experience. It was useful and necessary for that energy to be locked away at one point, but life changes. We might outgrow the need for that energy to be locked down and it starts to come to the surface. We often experience that as pain.

There are a couple of situations that can bring this sequestered energy and pain to the surface. First, if our system is overwhelmed and doesn’t have any resources left to dedicate toward keeping the energy contained, the energy and pain can start coming to the surface, especially if we encounter extra stress. In this case we’re being forced to discover how we’ve disconnected from ourselves, which is a necessary part of a natural healing process.

Secondly, when someone comes to my office in pain, I find that, often, they’re going through some transition in life. They’re already feeling and doing and thinking something new. And since the energy that’s bound in the pain has to do with their old life, it starts coming to the surface. They still might have parts that aren’t so sure and so there’s some resistance and it can be uncomfortable or painful. In this case we’re being asked to transform and refine our relationship to this energy that has previously been sequestered, which is different rhythm in the healing process.

In either case, the solution is to actually bring our attention to the pain. Our attention is a really powerful tool. We can think of it as an enzyme that causes pain to digest and unfold and evolve. We could also thing of our attention as a lubricant. The healing rhythms that I just mentioned are our life nudging us toward our growth and evolution. Life is going to keep putting pressure on us to grow and evolve whether we want it to or not. When we choose to bring our attention to the process of growth an evolution, it lubricates it; smoothes it out and brings some ease to it.
